To kick off, I’d like to say that I am not a fan of gendered products. Pink and flowery for mum and dark and mahogany for dad. “Men’s products” have a lot of black and chrome and power words in their packaging, designed to make them feel better about buying grooming products I guess?
If I wanted to buy my dad a candle, it would be based on the smell, not whether it was called “tuxedo” or not.
However, if like me, you find it hard to buy a gift for your dad, on fathers’ day or otherwise, I’ve put together a little gift guide. Though I think mainly these are things that I want tbh… Take a look, let me know what you think!
Bellamy Sting Ray Leather Bracelet
If your dad is the bracelet-wearing type, then this gorgeous masterpiece of a bracelet could just be the perfect wrist adornment your dad needs.
I’m in love with the skulls (how goth) and the “stingray” finish the leather has is to die for. Heart eye emojis all round for this one.
Mark (who is not a dad) likes this bag, and I’m going to extrapolate outwards and say that even if he was a Dad, he might still like this bag.
It’s pretty cool though, the perforations make it look a bit sporty, and the drop dead logo gives it a bit of an edge. Perfect for carrying stuff and also being edgy at the same time.
T-Rex Bottle Opener – Firebox
What better gift could there be than a dino bottle opener? I would like one in my house, to be honest. It’s cast iron and I think it would be a great addition to any kitchen, tbh.
Superdad Bath Bomb – Lush
Washing is great for dads. If yours is a bit grubby, then a good bath bomb might encourage a relaxing soak in the tub. This one is even dad-themed, so getting him in the bathroom is that little bit easier! Seriously though, if your dad enjoys a good bath and you’re a bit strapped for cash, this Lush bath bomb is going to be pretty perfect.
My dad loves a good piss up, and he loves fancy vodka in a fancy bottle. Now, I have no idea what this tastes like, but the bottle and the branding is on fleek, so it’s a perfect gift for those vodka/packaging connoisseurs in your life.
Kian Arrow Pendant – Vivienne Westwood
Jewellery is always a great buy for A Dad. This necklace will give him cool points for wearing our Viv but also, he’ll look awesome in front of his bro mates because he will look stylish but awesome all at the same time.
For the new dad, there’s nothing better than a baby grow. I think this one is super cute. There’s a mommy version too (it would be weird to buy stuff for a child I don’t have yet, right? Right…)
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably a little bit clued up on feminism, but you realise that you have lots to learn, and lots of perspectives to consider. And if your dad is anything like mine, then giving him something that will stimulate his thoughts (even challenge them) is something he will relish. I gave my dad Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale for Christmas, and I think I will carry on the theme and give him something similar for Fathers’ Day too. These are the titles I’m considering:
– Shrill by Lindy West
– Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy
These are ones that I’ve read that had a lasting effect on me – Do you have any feminist titles you’d give to your dad?
